När The Cure, bandet som Robert Smith bildade med sina klasskamrater någon gång i mitten av sjuttiotalet, spelade på Bestival tidigare i år var det bandets första spelning i England på över två år. Det var den längsta livefrånvaron i bandets historia. Robert Smith har under tiden, förutom diverse samarbeten, enligt en sällsynt intervju i The Guardian tydligen ägnat sig åt att lyssna på jazz och återupptäcka gamla bluesskivor. Men när bandet väl gick på festivalens största scen verkade det som att ingenting hade förändrats. Jorden skulle kunna gå under men Robert Smith kommer fortsätta tupera sitt hår och sminka sig på samma sätt.
Öppningsspåret Plainsong tillhör bandets vackraste ögonblick och avslöjade keyboardisten Roger O’Donnells välkomna återkomst, för i ärlighetens namn är ett The Cure utan synt inte ”The Cure”.
Bestival Live 2011 innehåller hela sommarens spelning rakt av med extranummer, publikens jubel och allt – det känns nästan som att du är där igen. Alla klassikerna är med. De schizofrena poplåtarna – Lovesong, In Between Days och Just Like Heaven. Den mörka post punken – A Forest, Play for Today, One Hundred Years. Till och med psykedeliska kärlekshistorien The Caterpillar som inte spelats live sedan 1991 är med.
Bestival Live 2011 är troligtvis årets bästa liveskiva, men det kan även ses som en sammanfattning av de senaste trettio årens kanske viktigaste popgrupp. Ett kapitel hypnotisk, excentrisk och romantisk musikhistoria.

Robert Smith had in this time, apart from various collaborations, according to a rare recent interview in The Guardian, apparently listened to jazz and re-discovered old blues records. But when the band finally entered the festival’s greatest scene it was as if nothing had changed. The earth could end but Robert Smith would still tease his hair and put make-up on in the same way. The opening track Plainsong is among the band’s most beautiful moments and revealed Roger O’Donnell’s welcomed return, because in all honesty, The Cure without keyboards is not ”The Cure.” Bestival Live 2011 contains the entire summer’s gig with encores, the audience’s cheer and everything – it almost feels like you’re there again. All the classics are there. The schizophrenic pop songs – Lovesong, In Between Days and Just Like Heaven. The dark post-punk – A Forest, Play For Today, One Hundred Years. Even the psychedelic love story The Caterpillar, which hasn’t been played live since 1991. Bestival Live 2011 is probably the best live album of the year, but it could also be seen as a summary of what might be the best pop band of the past 30 years.
